We all will miss Wes at Central in many different ways. He helped us grow as we helped him and his family. God always seems to bring special people to Central in many forms. Now we have the opportunity to learn about mission co-workers of the Presbyterian Church (USA). I pray that our Church will become a siginificant supporter of this spreading of the word of Christ. I know Wes will help us do that as did Ben Weir before him.

A thoughtful and clear agenda! Well done. On the new membership outreach -- has Central considered using messages on WBAA? I bet there are members of the congregation who would be ready and able to sponsor such an initiative.

Bill,

I'm pleased with the content of your goals as well as your sharing them with us. I encourage you to seek the best balance between your work/personal time. Being available 24/7 for pastoral emergencies is trying for you and your family. Please provide ample time and energy for your family; we will all be better for the strength that will provide you.

I love this song. It has a very important place in the history of Central also. We used to march around the sanctuary singing this song. I can see the faces of many children and adults moving to the music as we marched to this Avery and Marsh tune.

I have found that most people like to develop relationships. I have spent the past 42 years developing relationships in this Church and encouraging others to do the same. I have tried to use Jesus as my model in developing relationships and in helping others do the same. I have found most of the visitors to our church wanting and looking for ways to connect into this Church.

I used to keep track of every visitor to Central and make sure they were reported to the session. The last I heard, we have about 225 visitors a year at Central. Think of what may happen if we could get 50% of them involved. Most of them want to be treated like we find Jesus treating others. They especially like it when their children are treated as Jesus treated children. I think this practice is the most useful practice I have developed and I pray that it may be useful in our Church.

Bill,

I think the visioning you, Jeff and the Session of Central is doing is a healthy process to go through. Change can be a difficult process to go through. It can be a very exciting time as well - to see where and what God has in store for the people of Central.

The 'Changing Hearts' and 'Connections' theme is an excellent theme for the congregation. People yearn for relationships, and they seek out experiences that will transform them. I believe that Central has a strategic place and location for Greater Lafayette ministry. Not to be too bold, but I can see the ministry spreading out through downtown Lafayette, and into the surrounding Lafayette communities. Much like spokes on a bicycle wheel, the connections shoot out from the building. That's the mission of the church, not just a building based ministry, but a community based ministry.

Friends (whomever reads these posts besides Bill) enjoy this wonderful adventure and opportunity for Central Presbyterian Church. I never would have guessed that this is where Central would have been when I was a teen/college student...

Peace to all!

I think the document is very good and well written. I wish there was a place for the congregation to participate in these plans. I will participate by listening and reading as proscribed. But after that I will bow out as is indicated by the action plan.

I think the church would grow a lot faster if the congregation were invited to participate. I know we had a chance to input before and I did. But I do not think that is enough.

Dare to love and to be a real friend. The love you give and receive is a reality that will lead you closer and closer to God as well as those whom God has given you to love.

Henri Nouwen

Criticizing is easy, owning that criticism is much harder.

We are not called to be uncritical. We are called to real love and real friendship with the people God has given us to love – and that certainly includes the people in our chosen community of faith. To be critical can be an act of real love and real friendship. To own your criticism of others is to claim your own sense of disappointment and dissatisfaction. Criticism expressed out of real love and real friendship opens the way for addressing and possibly healing that disappointment and dissatisfaction. If we don’t own our criticisms, if we simply hurl them outward, they are nothing more than mean-spirited attacks. They serve no purpose other than to wound who ever we believe has “let us down.”

In failing to own our criticisms, in using criticism in a mean-spirited attack, we also wound ourselves. We make it just that much harder for us to experience real love and real friendship on the level that we are called to as professed followers of God.

The Vision Task Force activity is very exciting. Also, taking time to do the job thoroughly is certainly worthwhile. We disbanded the Session Long Range Planning committee sometime in the mid 1980's as I remember. Since then our only real soul searching documentation has been under the time pressure of preparing congregational material to be used by our many pastor search committees.

I greatly appreciate how you have kept us posted on the time and attention by the task force so that we know that the questionnaires we filled out are getting a responce.

Is there a way to use the word "spirit" in our slogan? I like the possibility of the play on the word suggesting our own spiritual development and the Holy Spirit working through us. The spirit to change the world? Just a thought.

Disciples are concerned about the world. This has new meaning for the 21st century. People in the United States use and have used the resources of the world at a rate much greater than our share as measured by the percentage of the worlds population. So we as a nation and a church have concerned ourselves about the resources in the world as well as the people of the world. Some of this is good and some is selfish but there has been concern for the world. Now the world is shrinking and the resources are not abundant. Many argue that there are not enough resources in the world to supply the current population. If this is not true today it will be soon. We have to learn more about sharing as Christian Disciples in a 21st century.

Yes, as one of the session members in attendance Monday I was moved by these Statements of Faith. Heck I'm almost breaking up thinking about them and the similar Statements of Faith shared by the most recent Confirmation Class.

The power, the awe, and the love of our Lord was so apparent, both evenings.

(Kudos to the Nominating Committee!)

As a teenager I embraced science and math and found dependability and trustworthiness there. Later in life I had a 15 year experience of psychotherapeutic activity and reading. That helped me sort out the benevolent and malevolent aspects of human experience. Then I joined Cen Pres for Bible study opportunities and learned to become more aware of the divine spark within me and to see, appreceiate, and relate to the divine spark in others. So I have sequentially learned to love God with mind, heart, and soul in my path to learning to love my neighbor. It feels like a good start.

I believe this is a very timely article for Pentecost. God sent down the flame of the Holy Spirit and each person heard the word proclaimed in their own language. I think this sets a very big precedent for us.

All through nature God has given plants and animals the ablility to shed their fromer skins and become something new and wonderful. Why shouldn't we?

I wonder what we'll find underneath it all. Imagine a Central that reaches out to help ALL people, no matter who.

There is a jewel in the making. Let us follw Christ and see where He leads us. I am looking forward to the trip.

While sharing a meal with the Family Promise guests I began to think about how I would feel to be THEM. Yes, I would be grateful that someone cares, but would I want something different to eat? Would I rather eat alone? Would I be uptight and angry and have to keep it hidden? Would I be affraid? Would I resent the "strings attached".

Being a giver is easier. how fortunate WE are.

"Blessed to be a blessing" may be harder or easier than we think.

Editor's note: The comment below was in response to the information shared in the 4/30/2009 Weekly ENews, not the blogpost above.

What a great idea forwarding the finanials quarterly via e-mail, that will save us much in postage and also get the same info out more quickly. I wonder how many of us have a computer but seldom use it, and do NOT use our e-mail function? Maybe a note in the bulletin urging all to make an e-mail address available would further the effectiveness. I am greatly pleased with many of our recent efforts to update functions and Bill, YOU are the one who has pushed these developments along. A BIG WELL DONE, to you! Blessings.

Not for me, Bill! I have heard from too many friends that it takes too much time and you find too many "friends". I think we need more face to face time to build relationships and tell people about our Lord. Too many people are tied to their computer. And here I am answering you this way...I have taken too much of your time and mine!!

Bill, yes we are living in a technological age. It's a new way of communicating with each other.
I have a facebook page and have found former high school classmates and some central members.
I'm having fun and making new friends and getting reaquainted with old friends.
Give it a try. You never know who may find.

Bill,
I agree with the Tyranny of the Urgent for the staff and the members of the Boards. But in 3 years the members of the Boards can join the Congregation and take life easy. I am kidding but this is the way it seems to be. Some ore overcommitted and some are undercommitted. I wonder how a more reasonable division of the work can be made. Are there any Churches looking at this problem? I think a change may need to be made in the "Standard Operating Procedures" that might take some of the work out of the system rather then put more requirements for work into the system. Just some food for thought.

Bill, I enjoyed the poem too, tho' it's now Jan 2, 2009, and I've yet to figure out how it happened so quickly. I have a question - as we walked through the neighborhood last evening, I stopped tu reset Joseph in his upright position at a lighted plastic scene. My mind wandered to "what happened to Joseph?" - did he continue in the life of the baby and child Jesus? I'm always asking questions with answers I should know - there are many stories about "his mother Mary" -- xoxoM

Liked the poem. and for some reason, have felt the Christmas spirit early this Season. Usually have to wait until around now to get that special feeling of awe and the nearness of God. I am grateful for it as it comes at a time of need.

Thank you, Bill, for the for the gentle reminder that we should be living lives of thanks and gratefulness. We have much to be thankful for. Our lives become so cluttered with "stuff" that God's presence gets edged out. These days of Advent, awaiting the Christ-child, and sharing our thanks for God's presence and grace - this is a time to reflect on how we have been blessed.

Bill, thanks for clarifying for us regarding the hard work that is being done by our Trustees to make our buildings safe for all who use them.

Sara Stallings, thanks for having the vision to see that we can be a part of a Christian response to a hurting world.

Jim, the verse that comes to mind to me is 1 John 3:-17-18:

"If we have all we need and see one of our own people in need, we must have pity on that person, or else we cannot say we love God. Children, you show love for others by truly helping them, and not merely by talking about it."

Jim, I have long liked this passage from Haggai 1:2-8

2 Thus says the Lord of hosts: These people say the time has not yet come to rebuild the Lord's house. 3 Then the word of the Lord came by the prophet Haggai, saying: 4 Is it a time for you yourselves to live in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins? 5 Now therefore thus says the Lord of hosts: Consider how you have fared. 6 You have sown much, and harvested little; you eat, but you never have enough; you drink, but you never have your fill; you clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; and you that earn wages earn wages to put them into a bag with holes. 7 Thus says the Lord of hosts: Consider how you have fared. 8 Go up to the hills and bring wood and build the house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored, says the Lord.

Bill, thanks for your blog entry, and Terry thanks for your historical perspective regarding other programs hosted at Central.

I, too, appreciate all of the work that has been done by the Trustees and others in preparation of Family Promise. (With regards to the Trustees, I see this as a continuation of a lot of great work that has been done by the Trustees since the capital campaign.) Sarah Stallings deserves special mention for bringing Family Promise to the attention of Session.

For Central I think John 13:35 (NLT) is apropos:

"Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are disciples."

What other Bible verses come to mind?

Bill,
Thank you for making this clear to everyone. Central has supported several important porjects over the years with use of the buildings. LUM and Head Start were big ones. Both of these programs required building upgrades to make them safe and yes there were always questions of why? But in the end Central attracted people and most members came to love the programs and the contribution they felt good about. I am sure this will be supported in the same way once we are in to serving these familys.

I am sorry for your grief. I t is indeed hard to lose friends family, and even pets. It seems to me that most of the time we could be there for support and hold their hand. Sometimes there is absolutely nothing we can do or if we do we can't seem to reach them., which in my estimation is the hardest.
Sunday's program on thanking our saints in our lives made me think, "Who is a Saint?" I began to think of many people that have formed my life in one way or another and then I came back to the original question "Who is a Saint?" Can you give me any help in that direction?

Bill, I got some sad news yesterday, Patty, who graduated high school with Dick and I has terminal cancer and has a week to a month prognosis! She had a lump in her breast in the spring and let it go because she was too busy with other things. When she went in the fall to the doctor about it, he immediately put her on chemo 2 days after the mammogram. With email the word spreads fast. Of course all the girls are reminding each other that when you find a lump “DON’T PUT IT OFF” get it checked right away! But your message also brings to focus the fragility of life! The old saying ‘we are only here for a little while’ is very true! We often forget that in our busy lives and put off visiting a friend or loved one because we will have more time tomorrow to do that. For some tomorrow will be too late! Patty’s case is not the first one in our class. We have already lost several classmates to death, through disease and other forms of life lost. We have sat by while friends have done the battle with cancer treatments as we ourselves worked through in Dick’s cancer surgery in 2004. The bottom line is yes, don’t wait for the Saturday night phone call to learn of someone you cared about’s demise-reach out to those who are still here and let them know that you care and love them and in turn you can love life for all it is worth!

Pastor Bill,

I am sorry to hear of the loss you and your childhood friends are enduring. When you have had some time to put between you and this loss perhaps you can explain why on the one hand you say there is probably little anyone could have done to help her and on the other hand encourage us to reach out to someone, more as I would expect?

I had the good fortune this morning to be unexpectedly awakened by a friend at the door who was concerned because she'd expected to see me and when I didn't answer my cell number (it was off as I was sleeping in) she drove out here to see if I was alright. None of us are as alone as we think, or have as little impact on the human community as we might.

(In case you have no idea who I am, I am the uppity woman who wore the Horton t-shirt to the fourth Sunday of the Seuss series this summer, 11:00 services so far.)

God's Peace,
Paula W.

Bill, Rita and I visited 4th Prebyterian in Chicago this weekend. That's a downtown church on steroids! The sermon was titled, "Do Not Worry" and the second reading from Matthew 6:25-34 in essence says don't waste today worrying about tomorrow's troubles. Good advice, now more than ever.

Thanks Bill - and Jim - for prodding me! I just returned from a brisk walk, holding the hand of my dear husband of nearly 50 years, enjoying the crisp fall air and the beauty of the fall colors. God has provided such beauty in our world - beauty in relationships, beauty in surroundings, and beauty of good health. This is my 71st birthday, and I thank God that he has surrounded me with love and beauty for these many, many years. xoxoM

Great post Bill!! I too am the cynic. I find that I can always see that storm cloud in the midst of a blue sky without much effort. I also feel so often that we are bombarded everyday with doom and gloom, over and over and over via our wonderful media sources. Sometimes I find I am in a much better mood just turning them off all together. I am also a victim of what is described in sports as "quicksand". That is when something goes wrong, then another, then another, and all of a sudden you begin to panic. It then is like you are in quicksand, and the more you fight, the deeper you sink. Thank goodness for my faith in God! Just when I feel there is no hope, he gives me a tap on the shoulder and says take a look around at what you have, not what you do not. See what is right in your life, not what is wrong. It is then that once again I am humbled by the true bounty that he has provided me. I then have no choice but to be enthusiastic in my life, and by that I mean the real meaning of enthusiasm which is "Possession by God; divine inspiration or frenzy; Intensity of feeling; excited interest or eagerness." For me, when I am possessed by God, when he is in me, what happens on the outside becomes trivial. I then live joyfully, rather than cynically.

Thanks again for reminding me!!

Wes, I think you've stated it well.
Central does a very good job reaching out to the community, country and world with events like Back to School and Xmas Jubilee, Youth Group Mission trips and the annual mission trip to Mexico. And there are individuals who work tirelessly as volunteers in the community, which I think is a form of quiet evangelsim and reflects well on Central.

Since regularly attending another local church since June, I now understand evangelism is an attitude of joy at the prospect of bringing Christ to someone who doesn't know him. It's the constant reminder that we have to behave in ways that present Christians in the best light. Always keeping Christ's example of forgivenss and repeated grace as the model for our own behavior. It's believing that every member is a minister.

I agree with you Wes, that it's hard to evangelize if it's not part of the culture of the church. I've learned over the last few months that there has to be many, many evangelism opportunities for those of us who are never going to go door to door to do it. Things like a free community picnic with fabulous food, pony rides, elephant ears, hayrides, and a well known Christian rock brought over 1000 guests-- from a congregation of less than 500. Things like "Board Game" nights in the Wifi equipped coffee cafe entice many who don't attend the church... but may one day. Things like a womens' gourmet dinner prepared and served by the men with a focus on womens' issues are easy things to invite a friend to share. That's how evangelism starts.

I see that if there's an expectation of evangelism, people just naturally make things happen to support it. I don't mean spending hours discussing the type of music, the color of paint and who will clean up. I mean deciding to do something and just doing it. Even if it has to modified along the way. We loose so many opportunities waiting for it to be perfect.

I can't belive I'm saying this, but evangelizing is easy---when many are. Being surrounded by an attitude of evangelism and shared behaviors has made me want to contribute to the effort. I feel good when I bring a friend to one of the many opportunities. I feel engaged when I help with activities designed specifically for evangelism, not for the needs of those of us already in the club.

I'll never forget Ruth Moran saying at the outset of the contemporay service, "It's not for me, but I will support it as a ministry of this church."

Central is a very special place filled with amazing people. If they, as a body, decide that evangelism is a focus they will embrace it and be successful. But it will take many people being willing and ready to change some very entrenched ideas, attitudes and behaviors that have their roots in their parents and grandparents' experiences. It will take many Ruth Morans!

Wes—you are right on. You are not alone in perceiving that the church is hesitant to engage in evangelism. What does evangelism or “to evangelize” mean? Merriam-Webster’s definition of evangelize is “to preach the gospel to” or “to convert to Christianity.” Whatever the terminology, this is the Great Commission. This is the sum and substance of what Jesus was doing on earth and taught his disciples to do, and we are to carry forth. Have we forgotten? – “ … Jesus came and spoke unto them, saying, ‘All power is given unto Me in Heaven and on earth. Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you. And lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.’ Amen.” ( Matthew 28:18-20)

Are people within the church not equipped? Are they not motivated? What feeds, energizes and excites spreading of the Word?

There’s much activity and “doing” and bustling about at Central but I have observed little teaching or preaching Scripture in past months as instruction or preparatory work or encouragement to study and meditate on God’s Word. [Jeff, what you have done and are doing for us is very meaningful.] While activity is certainly an important component, what is the purpose behind it? Is it to simply take care of physical and emotional needs, or are there long-term commitments and follow-up to care for the spiritual health of individuals whom we serve? That is the Great Commission’s intent—to serve people’s needs, guide them to knowing the Person of Jesus Christ and having the staying power to disciple. Complacency is the doom of any organization, group or individual. Too many are satisfied to hunker down in the status quo. When complacency enters our Christian life, then we are susceptible to many things which God did not intend for us and which are harmful. It affects others.

Through the adult discipleship team we have strived very diligently to offer more Bible studies—learning what the Bible, as the inspired Word of God, says to us. One might be surprised at the resistance of Bible study in a Christian church. Many prefer balancing Bible studies with other areas of interest such as arts & music, current events and the like. Central is a church—it should be a feeding station. Having opportunities to delve into scripture—really study it—should be paramount. As long-time or new Christians we can never be instructed too much from the Scriptures and it would be appropriate to have sermons coming from it. Sola scriptura.

I am reminded of Romans 10:14-17: How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!" But not all the Israelites accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed our message?" Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message (preached), and the message is heard through the word of Christ.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 states “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” Sola scriptura.

It seems to me that there is a great hesitancy at Central to engage in evangelism. Even the word "evangelism" brings all sorts of strong emotional responses to people. Why is that? Why are we so hesitant to engage in something Jesus commanded and commissioned us to do, and that faithful Christians have done for centuries? I think maybe part of it is that we have bought into the notion that "religion is a private matter." Or we've had negative experiences of being "evangelized" by someone else. Or we don't want to be perceived by others as some religious nut. Or we want to distance ourselves from the image of some un-intelligent, uneducated, anti-intellectual, militant "Christian" the media so often portrays. Or we simply don't have the strength of faith to swim against the cultural tide. Still, these are just excuses, I think, and don't get us off God's hook for intentionally engaging our community with the gospel of Jesus Christ. We go into hiding or remain silent rather than thoughtfully, prayerfully, carefully, and creatively thinking of ways to meaningfully and effectively reach out to our neighbors with the grace AND truth of Jesus Christ. Am I way off the mark here? This is just my general perception of Central as a whole...I know all generalizations are a bit of a charicature. Nonetheless, evangelism seems to be one of those bananas we simply won't go after, and we seem to be a bit suspicious of anyone crazy enough to try to climb that pole.

I had one of these moments fairly recently, and it took me by surprise. The massive earthquake in China last spring was a terrible tragedy for the people of that country, and it had a very personal connection to us as our daughter, Sara, was teaching English in China at the time the quake hit.

Although she was thankfully nowhere near the epicenter, (her teaching assignment was hundreds of miles away on the eastern coast), over the next few days, Gary and I began to hear from friends far and near, some "just checking in" after years of being on the Christmas card list, some close by who picked up the phone to make sure that Sara was indeed safe. (Thank you, Jeff Cover!)

The feeling of being a part of God's larger community was very moving--people we had not thought of for years called or e-mailed, telling us they were praying for Sara and for the people of China.

It was a reminder to us that God's people are always his people, wherever they (or we) may be. We were surrounded by a sense of peace and the knowledge that people all over the world were connected, praying for our daughter.

We both felt linked to something much larger than us and I felt a tiny, tiny glimpse of how big our God truly is.

Although she was thankfully nowhere near the epicenter, (her teaching assignment was hundreds of miles away on the eastern coast), over the next few days, Gary and I began to hear from friends far and near, some “just checking in” after years of being on the Christmas card list, some close by who picked up the phone to make sure that Sara was indeed safe. (Thank you, Jeff Cover!)

The feeling of being a part of God’s larger community was very moving–people we had not thought of for years called or e-mailed, telling us they were praying for Sara and for the people of China.

It was a reminder to us that God’s people are always his people, wherever they (or we) may be. We were surrounded by a sense of peace and the knowledge that people all over the world were connected, praying for our daughter.

We both felt linked to something much larger than us and I felt a tiny, tiny glimpse of how big our God truly is.

I too, look forward to this conversation being more widely shared in the church. If they are planning to participate in one of the two 10 am Sunday schhol classes Sept. 28 or in the "Just Neighbors" class, 6-8 pm on Sept. 30 I hope that participants will select a time slot around their preferences.

Bill,
I think the discussions concerning what it means to be a downtown church should prove to be very interesting; however, I do hope that the Elders are given a list of ideas/questions to cover so that in the end, we have touched many of the same questions/thoughts as the other groups. It seems that would help us assimilate the ideas gained from our discussions. Pam

Bill, your story about your "God moment" on the lakeshore especially struck a chord deep within me as I, too, had a similar experience. I was a teen in high school and the youth had gone to Montreat Youth Conference (I believe it was the summer between my junior and senior year in HS). I can remember being surrounded by all the beauty of God's Creation. The when and where escape me now as it's all a blur, but I can remember walking across the lake on the stone bridge and suddenly sense something bigger than myself, permeating everything - in us, around us, through us. It's difficult to put into words, but this is when the seed really dug it's way out of the ground and began growing.

Stories are important for us to share. We all come from different places, but our stories all interconnect. I imagine a wheel on a bicycle, coming out from a variety of places, and connecting at one central point, which metaphorically I would say is Jesus Christ. I think (again, metaphorically speaking) the outer rim that holds us all together is God, the Creator, Redeemer, Sustainer.

C'mon folks...keep the stories coming!

I too have had these types of moments, but recently I am drawn more to a suggestion Jeff Cover gave to me (he also suggested this in one of his sermons). I was discussing a time when I felt close to God, and when I had felt his presence. Jeff looked at me and said, "You want to feel that way all the time, don't you?" My response was "of course." He then suggested that I look at each day as if it were a filmstrip reviewing the day, taking the time to look for God. It has not taken long, nor has it been hard, to see God in my life everyday. It has changed my entire attitude. I can honestly say, now that I am looking, I feel God every day.

I have really enjoyed your articles since I've moved to Texas. I haven't met you, but I used to sub organist at the church. It is a wonderful congregation, and I miss everyone in Lafayette. Thanks for giving me a touch of home.
